Celebration of World Environment Day 2023

Assistant High Commission of India, Kandy in collaboration with Sri Dalada Maligawa, Kandy, government and other entities celebrated the World Environment Day 2023 in the premises of Sri Dalada Maligawa (The Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic) on 5th June 2023. The celebrations were centered upon the theme of World Environment Day 2023 ‘Solutions to Plastic Pollution’. In the function held at Maha Maluva, Acting Diyawadana Nilame Mr. Mahinda Dela, Vedda Chief Uruwarige Wannila Aththo, Assistant High Commissioner of India in Kandy Dr. Athira S., Central Province Buddhist Affairs Commissioner Mr. WMAH Bandara, Central Province Environment Authority Director Ms. Geethanjali Senevirathne, teachers and school students took part in World Environment Day celebrations.

  1. The official event began with paying condolences to those who lost their lives in the tragic train accident in Odisha and wishes for the speedy recovery to the injured. In his speech, Vedda Chief Uruwarige Wannila Aththo highlighted the importance of nature and trees and maintaining a balance between development & preservation of nature. He urged the participants to vow to plant a tree on their birthdays so that around 100 trees are planted in one’s lifetime. Speaking on the occasion, Assistant High Commissioner Dr. Athira S. highlighted the importance of Mission LiFE launched by the Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi. LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment) is a mission to mobilize individuals to be 'Pro-Planet People’. AHC urged the participants to adopt the mantra given by PM of India, ‘Reduce, Reuse and Recycle’ for sustainable environment.

  2. A plant Dansela was set up at Maha Maluva inside the premises of Sri Dalada Maligawa wherein total 1,500 plants were distributed to the students and visitors. To create the awareness about conservation of environment and reduce the use of plastic in daily lives, school students from Central Province performed street dramas before a crowd of around 500 people. On the occasion, certificates and prizes including books & plants were distributed to the winners of competitions held in various schools of Central Province in connection with World Environment Day.
